Custom Trackday Triumph 675 Street Triple and Daytona Fuel Injection Tuning

The 675 Triumphs are one of the best performing middleweights around.

As a customer related after tuning his track bike: "It never felt bad, but now it feels like the throttle and engine power are both "there" - at all rpms and throttle positions."

Wheelsmith uses the EC997 dyno and a multi-gas analyzer to tune to Best Power while retaining good fuel consumption - resulting in a nice clean running bike that has improved power and decreased backfiring. And no stumbliness in transient conditions.

Tuning?
So good in fact, that we tuned Michael Barnes' Infineon winning AMA XR1200. Chuck Sorensen's gsxr1000.

We've done quite a few 675 Daytonas and results have been wonderful. Lowend and midrange are smoother and more responsive.

Full throttle power and mixture is improved.   Throttle response in neutral is improved. The bike even sounds better.

One of the common problems with the current state of the art in the motorcycle industry is that when "tuning to an AFR", you are looking at ONE gas and simply "telling" the engine what it should have, without verifying a couple things: what IS supposed to be the "magic AFR" really the "AFR"? Is the "magic AFR" really the amount of fuel and ignition timing that the engine wants?

From looking at "AFR value goal" generated maps, I think that the Triumph's issues were the result of  "in reality -  too rich" AFR mapping.

Using 4 gases helps a lot.

Feedback

Hi Marc, Raul just came by the warehouse on a Triumph 675. He said he just put the shift star and spring in and asked if I wanted to test it. I took it for a ride around the block and was amazed at how quick and smooth the shifting was. After running dozens of these on the dyno at AMA and CCS/ASRA races, I have never tested one of these that shifted so nicely. Big improvement !

I bought a 2013 Triumph 675R in March of 2013 and in one year and two months it has over 19,000 miles on it. In that time it has performed nearly flawlessly.

I remember missing just two shifts, both on the upshift between first and second gears. I attributed these to not enough pressure being placed on the shift lever. Other than that, shifting has been smooth and predictable.

There was also a distinct clunk when the gears engaged on the upshift between first and second. There was never any problem, but it caused me to prefer to use the clutch lever upshifting between first and second, and the quick-shifter from second through sixth gears after that.

I recently had the Factory Pro Tuning Components shift star and shift spring installed. Shifting between second and sixth gears remained smooth and predictable, but with the Factory Pro star and spring, each shift is much more positive, with a slight click that could be felt through the shift lever.

The major difference was in the upshift between first and second gears. The clunk was completely gone, and the shift was just as smooth and positive as those between all the other gears.

Downshifts are also more positive, with the reassuring click. None of the shifting with the Factory Pro components could be described as “notchy”, and no additional pressure is required on the shift lever.

The Factory Pro Tuning Components shift star and shift spring are two of those things that you don’t think you need, until you get them installed.

Notes on external quickshifters

When you look at quickshifter "kill" duration at 55ms, every upshift you are losing about 1/20th a second. Do 20 upshifts and you lose 1 full second of applied power. 100 upshifts and that's 5 seconds that power is "killed" while the QS is waiting for the shift to complete.

If you quicken the shift mechanism by 10%, you decrease the shift kill time by 10% and that's 1/2 second in 100 shifts - and we could all use an extra 1/2 second....... :-)

Of course, I can't guarantee that you'll drop your lap times by 1/2 sec per 100 upshifts - but - wouldn't it be mentally less effort and cool to make missed upshifts and downshifts virtually disappear?

Note about quickshifter shift kill time:
The STAR kit shifts QUICKER.
You must set your aftermarket adjustable quickshifter kill time 10mm to 15ms quicker or the shifting will be clunky on the track.
Example: With stock parts, you needed 60ms. With our parts you need 45ms (or thereabouts)

However, the kit works well with the standard 675 quickshifter timing.

Installation:
1 -2 hours - requires clutch basket assembly R&R to install

Artisan Crafted Fine Cheeses – Since 1865

Specializing in Handmade Brie & Camembert

Marin French Cheese Co., also known as The Cheese Factory and Rouge et Noir is not just the oldest cheese manufacturer in the country, but a vacationers and day trippers destination as well as a unique part of American History. Located north of San Francisco, east of Napa County, west of Pt. Reyes and Olema and south of Sonoma County, Marin French has produced hand crafted Artisan soft ripened cheese since 1865. Rouge et Noir cheeses are similar to French and European varieties but reflect the characteristics of Northern California, producing it's own regional style.
The extension of the laboratory for engines of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology was completed in about 1935. Its architect was Rudolf Otto Salvisberg (1882-1940). He had a successful career in Berlin but returned to Switzerland after the advent of the Nazis. His architectural style was somewhat similar to that of Erich Mendelsohn. The staircase of the laboratory is in normal use but well preserved.

Maybe in next rewrite, he'll fix the ignition timing and dyno chapters...
